National Catholic Committee on Scouting® Announces Scholarships
Julia Amendola Awarded $2,000 Scholarship
Irving, TX - 06/21/2021 - Julia Amendola of West Nyack, NY has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. She is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of New York. This year eight service scholarships totaling $22,000 were awarded nationwide to recognize Scouts for outstanding service and leadership in four areas: Church, Community, School and Scouting.
Brought up in a Scouting family, volunteering has always held a special place in Julia’s heart. She states, “Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to make people smile. That’s probably why I chose Scouting. I remember the first time I heard my brother repeat the Scout Law. The words helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful and reverent greatly appealed to me. Even then they spoke to who I was.” When asked why volunteering is important to her, Julia responded, “When I joined Venturing and learned the Scout Oath, the sentence ‘To help other people at all times’ also resonated with me…It was like I was being called to duty, or maybe more appropriately, being called to a vocation.” At her church, Julia has been active as a lector and retreat leader. She played the role of Mary in St. Francis of Assisi’s Passion Play “As Seen Through the Eyes of Mary” and received both the NCCS Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII Awards.
In her community, Julia was awarded the American Legion Good Citizenship Award and the Marine Corps League Outstanding Citizenship Award. She served for four years on Senator Carlucci’s Student Advisory Council and was the student lead in Meals on Wheels and Blizzard Box Relief Initiative. She also supported her local youth theater, the Hi Tor Animal Shelter and the Center for Safety and Change which supports the homeless.
Throughout her high school years, Julia has been involved in Student Government and is a member of National Honor Society. She participated in the Viking Mentor Program, Chorus, including the All-County Choir and was the featured lead actress in her school’s drama and theater program. In addition, she was co-captain for the varsity soccer team.
Julia has held numerous leadership positions in her Venture crew including President and Vice-President for programing and was crew captain for several high adventure activities. She helped found the all-girl Cub Scout Pack 46 and was their Senior Den Chief. She served as a Crew President for the 2019 World Jamboree. Julia was the featured speaker at the Hudson Valley Council University of Scouting and was a guest speaker for Woodbadge Adult Leadership Course in 2018. For her Summit Award Project, Julia, organized 40 individuals across 7 states to create over 600 reusable cloth masks for Rockland Food Bank, People to People, during the early stages of the pandemic. Julia plans to attend Villanova University.
To be eligible to apply for the Emmett J.
