STEM Ranch
‘A Campaign For Our Scouts’ Future’
The STEM Ranch Project (capital campaign) is a vision of the Greater Hudson Valley Council to establish a fourth camp at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation focusing on Skilled Trades, STEM, Maker Arts and Equestrian Studies.
Developing a STEM Ranch camp is necessary when one examines the current environment that Scouts live in. Consider the expansion of STEM related Merit Badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America and the growing number of youth participants within them. Also, the growing demand for skilled trades workers & maker arts hobbies. An expanded STEM and skills trade area is needed to keep up with current trends. Also, Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation is the only Scout camp in the Adirondacks that offers equestrian studies and the interest continues to grow year after year. The equestrian program makes Read a unique and desired location to attend summer camp.
The STEM Ranch camp will be comprised of buildings, labs, learning areas, pastures and trails within the camp. The equestrian area, at this time, needs minimal upgrades. The STEM Ranch Headquarters allows the staff a place to plan and meet. To complement HQ, a new camp shower house will need to be constructed. The shower house will have four individual locking shower rooms and a utility room with a washer/dryer area. Providing a place for imagination and learning to occur is the main focus of the new camp. The Sustainable Classroom will allow the Scouts to see what an off the grid building is capable of. The Classroom will have all of the wiring and plumbing in plexiglass. This will allow the Scouts to view how the systems work. This classroom will be done as a renovation of an existing structure on the property. It will be a place for youth to learn about solar energy and how that energy can be used. The STEM Lab Building will be the focus of the STEM Area. The building will consist of 3 Labs that will include a garage door for easy transformation from one Merit Badge to another. The Labs can be easily converted from classroom to hands-on learning making it the perfect environment to teach any STEM topic.
Once completed, STEM Ranch will prove to be a sought after camp for generations of Scouts. STEM Ranch - Vision, Education, Values.
